What is Biointensive Agriculture?

|
- Nutritional and caloric requirements for one
person can be met with small area (4,000 ft2).
- Uses 70 to 90% less water (than conventional
agriculture).
- Uses 50 to 100% fewer purchased inputs (than
conventional agriculture).
- Uses 99% less energy (fossil fuel) (than
conventional agriculture).
- Rebuilds depleted soils and soil organic matter.
- Uses mainly resources available to the most
people (works on marginal land with hand tools
and indigenous knowledge)
Benefits of Grow Biointensive Agriculture
GROW BIOINTENSIVE agriculture is a modern method of sustainable farming rooted in
traditional practices that successfully sustained civilizations for thousands of years.
Based on the methods used by the ancient Chinese, Mayans, market gardeners of Paris
and numerous other peoples, GROW BIOINTENSIVE has rediscovered these methods, while
coupling them with the realities of the 21st century. Across the globe, we are faced with
soil depletion, land shortage, water scarcity, over population, decreased soil fertility, and
dependence on non-renewable fossil fuels. Hence, John Jeavons has undertaken
'tightening' successful farming practices to grow soil, minimize water usage, maximize
yields, increase soil carbon and nitrogen level, and feed people a balanced diet. The
work of Ecology Action makes this possible on marginal lands, including hillsides and
infertile terrain, within a closed system.
